Sunshine State showdown

McCain 540 by 240 alternate #1.jpg

Last night the battle for the Republican presidential nomination drew to a close. Or at least it seemed to draw to a close.

By uniting Florida's irregular Republicans -- the liberals, the moderates, the pro-choicers, and the strongly anti-Bush -- John McCain managed a convincing win against Mitt Romney. Rudy Giuliani, long the Republican frontrunner, finished in third place, a humiliating blow in the state his campaign had chosen as its last stand. Though Mike Huckabee soldiers on, in hopes of winning Southern delegates and possibly a vice presidential nomination, the race has for all intents and purposes come down to two men. Armed with Giuliani's endorsement, McCain has the McCainmentum. But Mitt Romney, the turnaround artist known for corporate derring-do, hopes to unite conservatives in a last-ditch effort to stop the moderate McCain. Is this one turnaround too many?
