Why Hillary Can't Win

In a different, bygone era, Hillary Clinton's loss in North Carolina last night probably wouldn't have inspired the pundit class to pronounce her campaign finally and officially toast. After all, there's still no plausible way for Barack Obama to assemble the 2,025 delegates he needs to clinch the nomination without persuading at least a hundred or so of the famously uncommitted superdelegates to leap on board his bandwagon. And there's nothing in the Democratic Party's rules that promises the nomination to the candidate who's merely leading in the delegate count or the popular vote. If anything, it's the reverse: A system that requires the winner to marshal a supermajority of delegates rather than a mere majority, and that throws a slew of superdelegates into the mix, would seem to be designed to have close races decided at the convention, rather than by a whisker-thin majority in a voting system that, were it designed differently, might have Hillary in the lead instead.

Certainly, this is how things used to work. Nobody was surprised or appalled when Ronald Reagan tried to unseat Gerald Ford at the 1976 Republican Convention, or when various Democrats (led by none other than Jimmy Carter) mounted an unsuccessful "Stop McGovern" effort in Miami in 1972, even though both Ford and McGovern went into those conventions leading in delegates and votes. But it isn't how they work anymore. When you listen to analysts and politicians talk about the primary process, there's a clear consensus that the spectacle of a convention in which superdelegates "overturn what's happened in the elections," as Nancy Pelosi famously put it, would be disastrous for the Democratic Party. And Pelosi's choice of the word "overturn" tells you why: It implicitly makes the will of the people, however imperfectly and haphazardly expressed (an open primary here, a closed primary there, a caucus elsewhere), the arbiter of legitimacy, and consigns to the dustbin of history the old idea that the convention is an integral part of the candidate-selection process, and that party leaders should have as much of a say in who gets to be their standard-bearer as primary voters and caucusgoers.

So while the design of the system technically allows superdelegates to do what they think is best for the party (or for themselves and their constituents), the realities of life in a mass democracy make "overturning" even a narrow margin in votes and delegates well-nigh unthinkable. Which is why Hillary needed a chance at some sort of popular-vote lead (with Florida thrown in, if nothing else) to justify continuing her campaign. And it's why, after last night's results extinguished even that thin hope, her campaign is finally finished, whether she's ready to admit it or not.

Unstoppable

John Heilemann says that the lack of a Democratic "deity" means only Hillary can decide when to stop.

Vote Both?

Democratic Leadership Council Chairman Harold Ford Jr. argues that the numbers support the necessity and strength of an Obama/Clinton Democratic Ticket.

Her pick

Jonathan Alter says that Clinton's choice is either to go down ugly or to go down classy.

Desperation

Roger Simon says that for her to achieve a turnaround, she will need "momentum, spin, and fear."

This is racial. Look at the African American vote in N. Carolina. They would vote for Snoop Dog if he were running. This is antil-white racism.

As troglodytes like gtrevi are learning, the reason the Democrats must belated ly acknolwedge Obama's victory is that only a racist-inspired coup can deny him the nomination.

This isn't the first time I have seen patently racist and offensive commentary in the comment threads at the Current. You guys should really monitor it and take out comments like the one by gtrevi, 11:53 AM. That is beyond the pale. Gtrevi sounds like s/he is in the Klan.

"They would vote for Snoop Dog if he were running"!?!?!?!?!?

Excuse me gtrevi, how is "They would vote for Snoop Dog if he were running" not a racist characterization of African Americans. It is especially apropos as you write "This is antil-white racism" right after the snoop dogg comment (i believe "dogg" is the correct spelling).

People vote for all the wrong reasons a great deal of the time. There is a clear bias towards Hillary Clinton among the aged and women, which insinuates the elderly and women are engaging in racism and sexism, respectively, at least by your standards.

I think what you would be articulating, were you to have a brain in that empty shell you call a head, is that North Carolinians are not above voting on simple prejudices, like the person who is the same color as them. In that case, you would have made a very insightful comment (/sarcasm on; the whole nation displays trends of voting on simple prejudices, its no secret, except maybe if you fall in the category of people who are actively making judgments in the aforementioned simple minded ways).

That being said, there's both an argument here for (A) constituencies not having a knee-jerk reacting in favor of people who look, sound, and act like them (the day this is not the case is a long ways away) and (B) a bit of understanding on our part for the black and female communities because not voting for the first real viable candidate for president who is black/female is something i doubt 95% or more of the population cannot do.

For full disclosure, let me state that i am a 20 year old American born, university attending male of Indian descent whose parents are immigrants. This should hopefully give some context to my statements.

The outpouring of black support for Obama is the result of Bill Clinton's racially charged "Bubba" speeches, not some mythical anti-white racism. He went around North Carolina telling Confederate holdout populations that "people like you" supported Hillary. That in addition to his racially charged remarks in South Carolina. He's getting the legacy he deserves, as the Lil Abner of the Reagan Democrats. Obama should thank him for helping to sink Hillary's campaign.

Most Americans, black, white and brown, want to be one people and they are in the process of doing that, however some loathsome types may want to divide them for political gain. That used to be a Republican game, but to her shame, Hillary took that road also.

The Clintons brought the 90% black support for Obama on themselves, and no Democratic president in recent memory has ever won without strong black support. Likewise, not even Bill Clinton won a plurality of white voters, so Obama doesn't need to either.

Remember that with Hillary's built-in 10-15% lead among women on the basis of gender, and the fact that women make up 55% or so of Democrats, she actually receives stronger nominal support on the basis of identity politics than Obama. And that's without saying anything about the number of white voters who are voting against Obama because of race, which very well may negate the blacks voting for him because of race.

These results have gotta hurt for Sen. Bayh (IN) and Gov. Easley (NC). When you put youself out there, as they did in stumping hard for Hillary, you've got to deliver the votes. They didn't. Ouch.

Its sad. I think that the democrats will end up nominating Obama who will be snack food for the republicans in the general election. Hillary is still the only hope democrats have at beating McCain.

Sorry carlin. You're wrong. And instead of writing a whole bit on why, let me just cite Newt Gingrich:

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26376

So who should we believe, anonymous carlin or Newt Gingrich?

Obama’s win in NC proves beyond any doubt that he is a racially-based candidate. He can’t win the general election with just the blacks and the young. It would be another ‘Tsongas’ election! Clinton’s win in Indiana, by a slim margin, also raises the big question why Obama lost a state that he is supposed to win! Her win is indeed a tie breaker! The media continues to be anti-Clinton. Her win should be presented in the proper context of the quality of each of these candidates’s electability!

It really goes to show you who is racist in this country, blacks are voting 90% for Obama while whites are voting only 60% for Clinton. Its amazing that the Dems put forth the two candidates who have the least qualifications for Presidency. One is here solely on her last name and another solely on his skin color. Goes to show you that the Dems are all image and no substance.

I just wanted to post to applaud Viktor's well-articulated and reasoned posts. Thank you for your words :)

You know, it may well be racial. Those 65+ white rural folk won't vote for a black man if their life depended on it. What generation are they from anyway? oh wait, they ARE racist. The Clintons had their shot with the black demographic, and they squandered it. Remember, it was the black demographic that got them into office in the first place... by what, 90%? And even in Indiana, Obama nailed 47% of the white vote under under the age of 50. So tell me, is Obama a racially divided candidate? One more point. 8% of Clinton voters in Indiana are self-described conservative republicans. (do i smell rush limbaugh?) That means 60,000 Clinton votes came from WHITE people who will never vote democratic in a general election and are trying to sabotage Obama's candidacy. So who's got the problem here?

Interesting to note that it was the black demographic that got Clinton into office in the 90s. He even opened his office in Harlem and proclaimed himself "the first black President". And now those same people are voting 90% against his wife...I wonder why...the answer lies in the first post "They would vote for Snoop Dog if he were running"...its useless and naive to pretend that this isnt true. It is and that's fine, people can vote for whomever they want, lets all just be clear of the reason.

Hillary it seems, is addicted to the rush of the cheering crowds, which is not the main purpose of this campaign. Bill has always loved it and now they both get a daily buzz from standing in front of a crowd and waving and charging up everyone. It's over. Someone has to stop this because I don't think Hillary is going to check into rehab over this.

McCain2008,

You seem to have forgotten the "substance" (or lack thereof) in the presidency for the past 8 years. If the Republicans were above the hype of image, Bush would never have gotten the nomination in 2000.

I think it's a shame that we are in the 21st century, with an African American, a white female, and an ex-POW all running for President and we still can't get away from racist remarks. As Obama said, we are all people under a different color of skin...we all eat the same foods and release the same waste the same way....What's wrong with America!!!!????

gtrevi and McCain 08 are examples of the worst parts of the republican party: racism, no loyalty to truth, and an enmity for those not like them. Luckily, the majority don't follow this drum, and many republicans I know (including my dad) are voting on conscience and character this year and not out of fear and clinging to power.

They wouldn't vote for Hillary - she constantly diminishes the goodwill of all people, including democrats - but Obama gives them reason to cross over and feel good about their vote, because although not perfect, at least he listens to the other side, instead of trying to shut them down.

I disagree with the comments by Gretvi, but do not think they should be removed because this should be an open debate. While unfortunately some people make their choice based on the candidate's skin color (this works both ways), the real reason to vote for Obama is that he is an outstanding candidate.

Obama has the potential to inspire America to be a better nation, which will in turn inspire the world.

Racism is when a group votes solely on skin color and that is what has happened here. If someone points out that fact (it is a fact dont forget) labeling them racist is just a knee jerk reaction when truth is too inconvinient. You keep bringing up Bush, but Bush is not running this year so its will be tough for you to win on Bush hate only. Another proof that the Dems have no ideas and no plans other than to cowardly retreat from Iraq and to open borders to anyone willing to cross it so they can pop out 7 babies and get on welfare is the fact that the Dem led Congress has failed to accomplish ANYTHING AT ALL since 2006. We can all remember their grandiose promises however, dont think the voters have not noticed.

The best thing about this primary season has been the realization that we don't have to listen to right-wing blowhards like McCain 2008 and gtrevi anymore. They don't get to participate in the new movement for cross-racial, cross-class unity that Obama represents. It's no wonder they are terrified...

Bill Clinton enjoyed 85% of the black vote, so Obama's 90% shows only a 5% advantage due to race.

Also, only a third of North Carolina voters were black.

You can label me a "right wing blowhard" but as soon as your Obamajuana haze wears off ask yourself why your supposed "cross racial uniter" chose to sit 20 years in a church that preaches hate? that's right he did not hear anything like that in 20 years. lets hope he listens better on national security briefings. or is bringing that up also racist?

if Bill Clinton enjoyed 85% of the black vote, why did they all of a sudden switch to Obama? its cant be his record because he does not have any...hmmm...

Why are all the simpletons coming out of the woodworks?

I always thought the Atlantic had an enlightened following, given its history and accomplishments. If you want to stitch together key words and phrases from the hollowed out, illogical language that is this country's current political discourse, I'm sure Ann Coulter has a blog, or just go to Talk Left to shout into the sympathetic megaphone that peddles your mindless drivel.

But why come here?

I am truly sorry Hillary lost NC; I thought we could pull it out, but IN was a good victory. It makes me sad how divided our party has become. We need ever portion of the party in order for Democrats to win in Novemner. I think the world of Hillary but I also think Sen. Obama will make a great president as well. His beautiful family is an inspiration to families all over this country; I enjoy seeing them as much as I do Bill, Hillary, and lovely Chelsea. I cannot imagine supporting John McCain for any reason- he is a war hero but he represents everything that is wrong with this country. I will never support any candidate that acts as he does toward women; I know he is a Navy man and some sailors are salty ( I have one here at home) but they do know how to treat women in the proper way and calling names is a horrible thing to do. I am always reminded of how he just laughed when one of his supporters called Hillary the "B" word; what a crassand low thing to do. McCain is who I will fight in the fall. I support Hillary in everything she wants to do but if she decides that it is time to end her campaign, I will do by duty and sopprt the other deomcrat in the race. Too much is at stake to sit on the sideline. McCain will overturn Roe v. Wade in our lifetime with the conservative judges he appoints to the Surpreme Court and women's reproductive rights will be ended. If our democratic nominee loses to McCain in the general election, then it will be practically impossible to vote him out of office just look at what happened with Bush. Hillary I know you are a fighter and I expect you to fight to the end because the country is too important for you not to. I will follow your lead on how to proceed!

I have not read any inteligent responses to any of my posts. All I read is labels and chants for me to go away...that approach to criticism will not work in general election. Once American hero McCain stands next to B. Hussein "God Damn America" Obama, Dems might as well forget about White House for another 8 years. And nobody is "terrified", in fact I am elated that you are putting forth this ludicricity of a candidate...landslide in Nov is guaranteed.

Y'know, the Democrats only attract weirdos like blacks, Latinos, Jews, women, young people, and the elderly. Real Americans, that is, middle-aged Christian white men, are solid Republicans.

Good one Mike...dont forget their latest constituency...hordes of illegal wagrants of state.

From the perspective of a Canadian who doesn't really care how this nomination turns out, McCain2008 and gtrevi are obviously correct in their assessment. If the fact that 90% of black voters are voting for Obama doesn't imply anti-white racism, it at least implies pro-black racism.

Tom this is obvious to anyone with IQ over 80 (possibly explaining why most posters here do not get it)

Why does everyone think that Obama cant beat Mccain? I think he will overwhelming beat John. He now to needs to go the states, like NY etc, etc, and campaign and he will win by a huge margin.
Of course this a a racial race, but with obama it is not about race it is about character , honesty and intelligence and he has it all.

chichi2, Was your post some kind of joke? Do you not see the contradiction in your declaration? Obama will unite everybody - except the right wing blowhards; they aren't invited to participate.

Obama wins because he really represents "Change". Because he's a smart Politician (note the capital P) and not a vivious one. And it's really time for a change after 20 years in the hands of the Bush and the Clinton Families. Are we living in some kind of Kingdom were father & son or husband and wife can give to each other the power like Kings, Queens and Prince did in the past ? I think the issue is the type of Democraty that we want to live in. When the power stays in the same hands for a quarter of a century, is that still a democraty ? I am White, I happen to think I am smart and I'll vote Obama. More certainly, I know I am not the only one.

Obama represents "Change" we all know that, but unfortunately for him nobody knows what "Change" represents or actually means. Its just a repackaged version of "At least I am not Bush" platform that served Jean Kerry so well in 2004. Like I said...landslide in November.

Hello,

How will Obama unite everybody? He hasnt proven to half the democratic voters that he is even the one who should win. Until he has a platform or any real reason why we should vote for him, he is just fluff.

Even as a lifelong Democrat, I dont see any reason to vote for him in the fall if he is the nominee. I have never voted Republican, but Obama gives me no reason to vote Democrat.

You are right. This is a racial race, it cant not be. We have to face reality, that the United States even in the 21st Century is not ready for a black president. Why doesnt anyone admit this? Are we too stuck in a PC world that we can not state the obvious?

Obama is splitting the Democratic Party, way more than Hillary is. He is running like race does not matter, when it really does. In his world, it doesnt. He has everything, all the advantages, when the reality is that most blacks and other minorities, including mine, native americans, dont have any advantages and have no connection to him other than race.

As noted above voting because of the race works both ways as Hillary and her campaign leaders were fully aware when they capitalized on the racist feelings of the uneducated, under $50,000, white Pennyslvania and Indiana voters in their elitist ("uppity - "impudent") and his black church associations!

Looking at things in the USA from afar, it seems that this Clinton has from the start of her campaign had one obvious and insurmountable obstacle to being worth the Democrat Party's nomination for President. She remains married to the surviving former President whose personal life and narcissism has disgusted many Americans, and who it is impossible to imagine would play the passive role in a President Hillary's term in office that Dennis Thatcher played in Prime Minister (now Dame) Margaret's years in charge of the UK.

Enough already--you beat a dead horse. Of course Clinton cannot win. She is out of money, out of time, and out of states. It's a waste of space to keep restating to obvious.

Second, it is now obvious that America wants to believe in somthing so badly that there is almost nothing that can befall Obama that he cannot brush off. If his 20 year association with the racist preacher who will not go quietly into the good night did not finish Obama, nothing will.

Even (most) die-hard Clinton supporters (such as the undersigned) acknowledge that it is time for Hillary Clinton to decide precisely when and under what negotiated terms (if any) that she will gracefully withdraw from the race.

The super-delegates should have enough grace to refrain from public pressure in this regard, and allow Clinton to withdraw with dignity.

Wonkette captured the feeling with this headline: “Obama's Joyless Math Beats Hillary's Magical Maps”.

As to McGovern jumping into the fray this morning, Wonkette also nailed it with: “Famous 1972 Democrat Loser George McGovern Throws Hillary Under The Bus.”

The (publicly) uncommitted super-delegates do themselves no favors with us 50% of the Democratic electorate who supported HRC by kicking Hillary when she is down now. And it’s too late for those who have not previously endorsed Obama to suck up now anyway.

Be gracious. Seat Florida and Michigan (it will not make any difference anyway). Let Clinton withdraw on her own terms.

In addition, I would seriously think about offering HRC the veep spot—unless the DNC wants 30% to 40% of Hillary’s supporters to vote for McCain (the undersigned included).

Putting all y'all's racist comments aside, Mr. Obama is all hat and no cattle.

Ross, after her big upcoming wins in WV, KY and PR, Clinton will lead in the popular vote. Especially with FL counted. With MI counted, she'd have an even bigger popular vote lead.

She'll net close to 500K out of Puerto Rico. She'll net another 200K out of WV/KY.

No white Democratic presidential candidate can win without the black vote. Blacks vote overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates such as John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000. In like the 90 percentile, no Republican has ever gotten more than 10 percent of the black vote. Al Sharpton ran in 2004 and he did not receive a majority votes black votes even in the South so I fail to see how black voters are racist just because they like Obama. None of you people thought twice when blacks were voting overwhelmingly for a white candidate. So whatever.

Sorry, but the comment about Snoop Dog was right on the money! In the begining of this fiasco black voters were polled and asked who they would vote for. Most said Obama and when asked why, they said "Because he's black." Not 'I like his ideas, or he has a good policy but he's black.' So here we will be with unemployment at it's highest in 40 years, people losing their homes at an alarming rate, the country is stuck in an illeagal war, (Iraq) we are in debt to our necks and we will probably be stuck with a president that has practiacaly no experience! In case you are wondering, I'm not a member of any white power group, nor am I a racist. I don't believe Obama can beat McBush and so there is a good chance he will be president! (God help us) To all of you first time voters, you don't vote for someone because they look cool, or their skin color. You vote for them because you like their ideas and believe they would be best for the country! If you listen to the media, you will begin to believe Obama is the second comming! Too bad Joe Biden didn't make it, he would be the perfect choice for a president. Oh I forgot, he's a white guy.

If you say the blacks are racists, what are you saying about the old whites that giving Hillary just enough reason to continue her fight to destroy the Democratic party?

hey tigerlover. congratulations on pushing outright lies. most people like to dance around the truth, but not you. You just make it up as you go along.

In case you're wondering what i mean, its the simple fact that Obama had a HARD time courting black people when his campaign began. It wasn't exactly a secret either.

"The black-on-black argument seemed to be bolstered by recent polls showing Obama significantly trailing Hillary Clinton among black voters. But reading into poll numbers that way is a clever device, hatched by mainstream (primarily white) journalists who are shocked — shocked! — to discover that black people aren't as dumbstruck by Obama as they are."
-Time Magazine Feb 1st, 2005

Tigerlover, You are an idiot (oops, there goes civility out the window).

sorry. in my last post, i meant Feb 1st, 2007

AL Gore didn't win the White House. John Kerry didn't win the White House. Dukakis didn't win the White House. Mcgovern didn't win the White House. Bill Clinton had the only successful democratic presidency in the last forty years. I wouldn't equate Bill Clinton's obvious political talents with his wife's ability to govern, but I found the hatred unleashed by Obama supporters toward him disingenious and pathetic. It seems the Democratic Party had decided to cannibalize its elders. On the other hand Senator Clinton's less then organized campaign didn't earn her kudos (or delegates), her hyperbolae with respect to her war experience was insincere in the funniest of ways, and her gas tax proposal legless and pandering. I also found Senator Obama's comments with respect to using taxation as a "leveling field" unsettling and his speeches' careful ennumerations of the many ills that besiege us incredibly boring.
I quite don't care who wins the Democratic nomination at this point. Senator Clinton seems to have stepped from a Coen Brothers production while Senator Obama has become some sort of young Don Corleone whose ring has seen the kisser of everyone who's anyone in the Democratic Party or the MSM.
He of the thin resume and objectionable circles seems to have finally snagged the prize. But I doubt he'll be able to win the Presidency. I doubt he'll win the presidency though. Al Gore didn't win, John Kerry didn't win, Dukakis didn't win, and Mcgovern didn't win. None of them were growth democrats, none of them seemed solid enough to anchor this country of ours. I've voted for Gore and Kerry, but I'm tired of the Democratic miscalculations with respect to their nominees. I wish Senator Obama good luck. I won't enjoy the show one bit once it'll turn ugly.

Does anyone find it interesting that the only candidate that has not played the racism, agism or sexism card in this contest is John McCain. I know many of you will not vote for him, but he is a honorable guy. I am starting to see why he is polling %15 ahead of his party.

The Week After 9/11

Lets take a trip back in time. Just for kicks

Okay, it is a week after 9/11 and a poll has been conducted from a random selection of thousands of Americans from all walks of life, all races, both genders, and from all over the great United States of America.

The question is simple, yes or no:

Would you choose a Republican or Democratic nominee for President of the United States of America who had strong, long-standing associations with a terrorist, plus a racist hate-spewing anti-American minister-spiritual counselor, and a slime-ball crook currently being indicted?

The pollsters will not even mention some other creepy characters in the nominees past or the fact that his or her spouse claimed difficulty feeling proud of being an American.

As imperfect, but beautiful as America isbillions of people around the world would feel blessed and proud to have all we Americans have.

The pollsters will not inflict guilt by reminding people of the ultimate sacrifice of death our ancestors gifted us with so we could freely decide the future path of our great nation. No, the pollsters will not try to make people feel guilty for those rolling in their graves when we are less careful, less wise, or less appreciative than we could be. Will we let past sacrifices, either willingly given or wrenched away, be in vain?

Americans: How far have we traveled since the last open wounds? Can we go back in time to the week after 9/11 and frame our decisions for our country by the unity we felt as a proud nation, in opposition of terrorists, and against wrong-doing?

God Bless America, Always!

Viktor, what lies is Tiger pushing exactly? The fact that Obama got the black vote because of his color...if you think that's a lie then it is you who is the idiot (or a naive child). The whole democratic primary is a joke, they put forward two people neither of whom has ANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO SPEAK OF. That's just amazing to me, Joe Biden was a decent candidate and so was Edwards, but who do you pick? Billary and B.Hussein Obama...what a joke...

McCain 2008 --- You want logic, here's logic. A racist is someone who would never vote for someone of another race. African Americans have voted for Caucasian candidates many times in the past. Therefore they cannot be racist by definition.

I am not saying anyone is racist, people can vote for whomever they want for whatever reason makes sense to them, but when you see such a sudden switch in support from Clinton to Obama it makes you wonder (well not really) as to what that reason was...and that reason is race. African Americans have voted for Cauca... (can we say white or is that racist too?) candidates that's true, but only because there were never any black candidates. As soon as one came around they all flocked to him...probably for his spectacular and incredibly detailed "Change" plan (note the sarcasm).

And your definition of a racist is just that...YOUR definition.

A well put piece from Daily Kos:

Wed May 07, 2008 at 01:16:00 PM PDT

Boy, I keep hearing from all over the place that if it wasn't for those meddlin' blacks, Clinton would've won big yesterday!

Yes, it's true. African Americans were a big component of his winning margin in NC and paper-thin loss in Indiana. But who else was a big component? Let's look at some other demographics Obama got, with the percent

% of vote % for Obama

IN: People with college degrees 35 56 NC: People with college degrees 44 57

IN: First time primary voters 19 69
NC: First time primary voters 22 60

IN: Independents 23 54 NC: Independents 19 45*

IN: Liberals 39 56 NC: Liberals 42 63

IN: Urban 33 60 NC: Urban 27 66

IN: White 17-29 year-olds 12 54 NC: White 17-29 year-olds 8 57

IN: All 17-29 year-olds 17 61 NC: All 17-29 year-olds 14 74

IN: 17-64 year-olds 86 52 NC: 17-64 year-olds 80 60

The 17-64 number is particularly stark, but there are a ton of demographics that have voted heavily for Obama. Anyone under 64, first-time voters, young voters, urban voters, educated voters, etc. What about rich elites? Actually, Clinton won those in Indiana (52% of those making over $100K, which in Indiana, is a lot).

I should go around talking about Clinton's "non-senior problem". It would make far more sense, given that they're about 80 percent+ of the electorate, than bizarrely fixating on race as though it's the only factor at play.

(*) North Carolina is only the fourth state in which Clinton has won the independent vote.

James Vickers: I like Obama, if I could cast a ballot in the US election, I would vote for him. But I don't think you should be talking about how BHO will 'inspire the world'; instead, I think you should view his election as a surety on America's future good behaviour. Indeed, by electing BHO those in other nations might begin to forgive America for the past 8 years, they will see that you, as a nation, are taking a first, tentative step in the right direction. I don't want to be inspired by you. I want you to treat me with respect, or be left alone.

Again McCain 2008, Nobody really cares what you think. If you don't get where Obama is coming from its because you aren't listening. And that's why the political movement you and your comments represent are finished in this country. We don't need your divisiveness anymore. It's not going to do anything to help us solve the real problems this country faces, problems the same old politics of name calling and race-baiting and all that other balderdash only compound. We are tired of being distracted by the ad hominem fear-mongering and mindless media squabbles over minutiae you and your breed thrive on.

Oh and one more thing. Go ahead and bring up Jeremiah Wright. But who do you think has more dubious connections here, huh? Charles Keating anyone? Just wait until the fall...

Chichi2, its clear to me that you do not have an original thought in your head and much like your idol are reading of off telempromter (Obama website in your case). You need to exhale first, put down the Obama campaign talking points down. and then answer the following question

Why did your great uniter spend 20 years listening to the most hate filled and divisive propaganda I've ever heard? You cant and wont answer this, but your boy will have to if he hopes to have any chance in November.

Keep drinking the Kool Aid...

When you have a bloc of voters who would vote for a piece of cheese so long as it was Black and they thought it could get elected, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that their votes are racially motivated.

We don't convince anyone in these comment sections; but it is refreshing to have some place we can speak freely without being afraid of being beaten up or shot for it.

Contrary to the opinion of the hard left, this election will aggravate race relations in this country. It already has. And when Obama is defeated in November, things will get worse, because his defeat will be accredited to racism. Remember: all it takes is an accusation of racism to make it accepted fact. Once accused, White people are guilty until proven innocent.

This country is turning into a real hellhole.

Oh and one more thing...if you will treat everyone that disagrees with you with a statement "You just are not listening" then you will have a very hard time "uniting" people. remember not everyone drinks your Kool Aid.

Mike I agree with you on this, we may not all agree but to have a forum like this is very useful. I also completely agree with your statement about race relations, once Obama is defeated in November we'll see outcries of racism.

McCain 2008, Like I said, Obama's message really isn't directed at people like you. So nobody really cares if you join the party or not.

Really...I thought you're planning to unite "everyone" so now that's not the case. So his message is only directed at people that agree with it? that's some uniter...lol. guess what there are a lot of us and we vote. you childish remarks led me to believe that you're simply cutting and pasting from some article on his website and like I mentioned before you have no thoughts of your own and are unable to carry an argument nor defend your point of view. No wonder you're an Obama backer, easily impressed by the fluff, agreeable and not very bright.

Everyone keeps talking about the elderly or "the old racist whites" and the "under $50,000 crowd" and the "women" blindly voting for Hillary, because she is a white woman. Those comments are absurdly racist and classist, typical of the rabid left. You can tout an education unless it teaches you humanity, something you're so desperate to prove by rallying around this minority candidate with no experience or judgment to speak of. His claim to fame is not being a US senator when everyone else voted to go to war. His health plan sucks. He threatened to invade Pakistan. There's nothing to suggest he could manage a federal bureaucracy. He is not bipartisan but left-leaning, and he's apparently weak enough that he would be too easily manipulated by the bottom feeders pushing his campaign forward. The old-timers have seen many of these elections. The poor and middle class need a break after 8 years of Bush. Fine if blacks are proud of a candidate with a real chance, but they make up 12% of the population. The general is a different thing from the primary, and voters considering Obama's odds in the next round are hardly racist just because they evaluate his platform and find it lacking. It is time to lay off the kool aid, everyone yelling racist here.

Obama cannot win the election without Reagan Democrats, who will now defect e-masse to McCain. Blacks live in the south, and the south has Republican in every general election since 1964. Without Ohio and Florida, Obama is toast.

A good fight at the convention is exactly what is needed. Democrats have been doing very poorly in recent years picking a nominee who can win the general election. Superdelegates were created for a situation just like this. Hurrah, superdelegates! Remember, you can keep changing your mind up until the convention -- and may the best woman win.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have never stood before me, as I would never go to one of their rallies.

They have always only stood before screaming, adoring crowds, kind of like Charlie Manson or Jim Jones followers.

If in front of me, I would ask/scream out to them:

Why did you rape Juanita Broaderick?

Why didn't you respond to the terrorist threats during your presidency instead of chasing strange pussy in the White House.

Why do both of you lie with such ease?

What could possibly make you think this election should be given to you outright?

SORRY FOR THE CAPS!!! .... BUT I WANT EVERYONE TO READ THIS!!!!

FIRSTLY, MANY SAY THE BLACKS ARE RACIST BECAUSE THEY ARE VOTING FOR OBAMA IN DROVES ... BUT WAIT ... ANSWER ME THIS, THEY HAVE BEEN MANY BLACK DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES IN THE PAST (Jesse Jackson etc), HOW COME THEY DIDN'T RECEIVE THE SAME % OF VOTES AS OBAMA ..... I"LL TELL YOU WHY .... BLACKS DIDN'T SEE THOSE BLACK DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES IN THE PAST AS ELECTABLE ... PLUS HILARY WAS RECEIVING LOST OF BLACK SUPPORT IN THE START OF THE RACE ... BUT WHEN BLACKS SAW THAT BARACK WAS WINNING >> THEY BECAME CONVINCED HE WAS ELECTABLE

SECONDLY MANY SAY BARACK CANNOT WIN WITH BLACK VOTERS ALONE >>> SO MANY OF YOU ALL ARE INSINUATING HE ONLY GETS THE BLACKS VOTES TO WIN >> RIDICULOUS >> THE REASON HE IS WINNING IS BECUZ HE GETS A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF VOTES FROM ALL DEMOGRAPHICS ..

THOSE DEMOCRATS THAT VOW TO VOTE FOR MC CAIN AND NOT OBAMA ... I'M SURE ARE THE SAME ONE WHO VOTED FOR BUSH 2x

LETS ALL UNITE & STOP THIS BITTERNESS ....!!!!

SORRY FOR THE CAPS!!! .... BUT I WANT EVERYONE TO READ THIS!!!!

THOSE DEMOCRATS WHO SAY OBAMA CANNOT BEAT MC CAIN ARE THE SAME ONES WHO WILL VOTE FOR MC CAIN COME NOV >> I'M 100% OF THIS >>>> AM I RIGHT????

IF HILARY ALONGSIDE PRES. CLINTON CANNOT DEFEAT OBAMA (AN EXPERIENCED CANDIDATE AS MANY OF U SAY) EXPLAIN HOW SHE CAN BEAT MC CAIN

MANY OF YOU ARE NOW SAYING HE IS RACIST AND WE HAVE LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM

SHAMELESS PEOPLE .. SHAKES HEAD

LETS ALL UNITE & STOP THIS BITTERNESS ....!!!!

McCain 2008...you do offer interesting commentary and of course I have to admit that you are correct in your definition of racism and its representation...it is an accurate way to describe racist tendencies. However your statement that there have been no intelligent responses to any of your comments is quite comical when you choose to use a phrase like "Obamajuana"...it just means you are going down to a level you clearly claim belongs to anyone who chooses to disagree with you...and wow, are you deluded. Utilizing the Wright refrences are also quite inane at this point as well. You are simply utilizing simplistic tools to hammer inconsequential thoughts across this forum. I am Scandinavian, extremely white, and have no white guilt because I was not born in this country and can't claim its history as my own. I can speak though for those across the oceans who are looking directly at these elections to see if this country can once again be a part of the world instead of continuing to push its current policies of isolation and your statements confirm that those policies are deeply engrained within you. It is not just about what happens in this country, we now have to find a way back to respectability within the world as a whole instead of constantly saying "who cares" to everyone around us. My father fought for this country and prided himself on being an American citizen and was a proud Republican up until his death. I myself will forever regard Ronald Reagan as one of the, if not greatest Presidents in the history of this country...but this would not have been Reagan's vision or legacy. So now...it is time to evolve and not regress. It is time to stop pointing fingers and blame the results on demographics. You also seem to forget that he scores highest with the better educated, more affluent and yes...the youth. Our future will not be forged with the past, but with the present and future and it is time for the intelligent to be allowed a shot at fixing and reviving this vessel. It is time...for Obama.

the race is not over yet. I do want a white hater in the office.

gtrevi you have a very low regard for black people don't you. Your comment was racist and so are you. OBama is for all of America including someone like you.

It's touching that Mike and McCain 2008 have found each other. They can now have numerous edifying conversations, knowing that the other person will listen and understand completely. Another instance of the internet bringing people together who otherwise might have a hard time finding each other.

"Why did your great uniter spend 20 years listening to the most hate filled and divisive propaganda I've ever heard?" : McCain 2008

Guess you never saw "Triumph of the Will," huh? I guess as a republican you already know the plot...

Hillary's slimey campaign wasn't able to derail the Obama campaign. I am so happy !!! This whole thing will be over VERY SOON. We will very soon witness the end of the sleazy, slimey, lying, cheating, CRIMINAL Clintons !!! YIPEE !!

Let me see: Obama-drug addict in college Obama-turns back to THE flag of the USA Obama-REFUSES to say the pledge of allegance Obama-belonged to all black extreme militant church that "Damns America" for 20 that is TWENTY years folks. Equivalent to black KKK group!! Obama-Strong alliance with Kenya and stayes in constant contact with a militant Muslin cousin named Raila Odinga living there. He also donated 1 million dollars to their militant cause. Obama- REAL name Barak Hussein Muhammed Obama. Obama-Real father extreme Muslim, stepfather militant Muslim brought up in Indonesia (THE most terrorist Muslim country)!! Obama-FOR PRESIDENT OF THE USA, IS EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY COMPLETELY INSANE? 9/11 WOULD BE A PICNIC COMPARED TO WHAT THIS JERK WOULD DO TO THIS COUNTRY!! Obama-Biggest lier you have ever heard on tv. nOTHING HE SPITS OUT HAS BEEN PROVEN!! Obama- His racist wife will not let him wear a usa flag on his lapel... IF THIS TERRORIST ANTI-CHRIST BECOMES PRESIDENT, YOU MIGHT AS WELL BEND OVER AND KISS THIS COUNTRY GOODBYE FOLKS. THIS WILL BE A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY WITHIN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. MAYBE THE FBI SHOULD CHECK UP ON THE GOING ON IN KENYA WITH THIS OBAMA CHARACTER. HE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!! lIKE bIN lADEN SAID, KILL THEM FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IF THIS GUY WAS WHITE, HE WOULD NOT EVEN BE ON THE BALLOT AND MOST LIKELY BOOED OF STAGE!!! IF COLIN POWELL WAS RUNNING, HE WOULD HAVE MY VOTE IN A NANO SECOND. BUT THIS GUY OBAMA IS VERY DANGEROUS!!!

here's the deal, libs. Have your little black man inclusion party. HE HAS NO CHANCE. he will be mondaled, and clinton will pull the strings.

McCain will win 40 states. Deal with it.

ELIMINATE OBAMA AS A VIABLE CANDIDATE in 2012. That is the clinton mantra the day she leaves the campaign.

Good bye Clintons and it's about time. Bill and Hillary have become rich and powerful over the last 2 decades bleeding everyone they can, including blacks to obtain more money and power. Hillary is so vain she can't accept the fact Obama is going to win. As far as Obama goes, he might make a good President, just wish he didn't have Rev. Wright hanging in his closet. Besides it will be fun watching the Oprah show from the white house.

"They would vote for Snoop Dog if he were running. This is antil-white racism."

Is that before we grin and eat our fried chicken, impregnate our women, drink forties on the corner and collect our welfare checks or after? Following this logic, since Charlotte Bobcat's owner and founder of BET "Uncle" Bob Johnson is a huge Hillary supporter, wouldn't that mean us poor Negroes (or is it coloreds where you live) would vote for her instead?

And as for the charge on experience, seems that George Washington (a general), Abraham Lincoln (a one-term congressman from Illinois), Woodrow Wilson (a college professor and one-term governor of New Jersey), Ulysses Grant and Dwight Eisenhower (war-time generals with no previous political experience) all did seemingly well in the position. So please edify me (you can look this word up gtrevi) what additional experience does he need for this job; seems our "nucaleer" president didn't need to pass this type of litmus test!

I'm going back to my fried chicken now...why don't you go vote for McCain or David Duke or whoever you feel will put us back in our place on the plantation, suh!

To all those who think Blacks voting en masse should consider a few things:

1) Bill Clinton created a backlash with his comments last February. This drove many Black voters from Hillary Clinton. It was a slap in the face.

2) Thought this campaign women have openly said they support Clinton because she is a woman. That doesn't raise the ire of anyone, so consider what this inconsistency implies about you before you hurl accusations of racism.

3) Many Whites are voting for Clinton precisely because of Obama's skin color according to exit polls. If you do not consider that racism, at least you have to admit that this so-called reverse racism on the part of Blacks is doing little more than evening the field.

4) There is a difference of voting against someone because of skin color (i.e., racism) and voting for someone because you identify with them because of a common culture.

Dear fellow-Obama supporters:

It's so easy now to call for Clinton to quit. To tell her supporters "I told you so." To brag that Obama survived a two-pronged assault and regained momentum in the contest that is now pretty much impossible for him to lose.

It's also a really bad idea.

Clinton supporters are heading into their most vulnerable hours. Their hopes of seeing the first woman president (for many older supporters, possibly in their lifetimes) are dying before their eyes. Their fears about the racial divide that accompanies the Wright story are at least partially validated.

Many Clinton supporters will join us. Many already have. But many will succumb to fear or the not-so-subtle appeals of McCain or the GOP.

Clinton is basically forced to keep up the fighting stance publicly and fulfill her promises to donors by keeping every strategy open, even the nasty rule-changing ones that make us angry. And yes, she and her hubby may be in denial to a degree. But they aren't morons. They will exit gracefully soon enough. And hopefully even tone down the negative rhetoric now that it is pretty clear it can only politically harm her in the future.

Check out the following from Huffington Post that backs up this point from an inside Clinton source if you haven't already:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lawrence-odonnell/hillary-will-drop-out-byb100625.html

Anyway, the point is that we now have the capacity to breathe a bit easier with respect to the primary. Let's not shoot ourselves in the foot for the general. Now is the time to open our arms to Clinton people and speak positively about her campaign, whether it deserves it or not. The Obama campaign, to its credit, has perhaps made us forget how recently we depended on Clinton-style politics. They may have been playing an older, comparitively corrupt game, but it was the best game in town until recently and there was so much good that Bill gave us and that Hillary offered. And one day a new political visionary will hopefully come along and make Obama look outdated and corrupt by comparison. He knows he's not perfect and we shouldn't pretend he is.

When and if Clinton supporters tell us they are losing confidence in victory for Clinton or the Democratic party, I think it's best that we give them empathy and understanding. And for those that are still denial, there's no harm in backing off and giving them time to let it sink in as long as we don't keep fighting with them. I will be, in a way, sorry to see her go. She really did overcome amazing GOP attacks to launch a campaign that most of us thought would get her the nomination until this year. And it would have been really nice to see a woman in the white house. I'm excited about the idea of seeing a person of color within reach of that goal, and I really can't say which is more important or how much weight if any we should give such things in our decision about who to vote for. I'm voting for Obama for his policies, collaborative abilities, intelligence, and character. But I am all too aware of how subtly sexism has made life difficult for men and women alike, and I understand how badly female viewpoints are needed in our government. In that respect, Clinton's defeat is a loss for us all.

Now is the time to point out the similarities between Obama and Clinton, not the differences. It's so tempting to jump on the ridiculous gas tax proposal or get bitter about "bitter" comments or the recent focus on Rev. Wright, but let's save that steam for the general. Health care policy that saves countless lives, reigning in the tax breaks for the ultrarich, bringing our soldiers back from a military disaster...let's make sure our Clinton-supporting fellow Democrats know how much we care about the same things they do.

Obama is being set up for the slaughter by the republicans. many who voted for obama did so not because they really believe in his candidacy but because they dislike hillary. and all these is being fuelled by the republican machinery which knows its going to be much harder beating her. just watch them make mince meat out of obama. shame.

This discussion, like most of these threads, spend way too much time dealing with idiotic rants from nutjobs like McCain 2008. I say this as someone who supported "McCain 2000," but like anyone with a functioning brain who is not a Kool Aid drinking right wing radical I simply cannot vote Republican any more.

For the 70% of us don't support President Bush's policies, it is crystal clear to us that the Republicans have screwed everything up at home and abroad so badly and rely on an outdated silly ideology that looks like sheer lunacy to all but crazed Cold War and cultural warriors. The GOP has lost the young vote for a generation and this election those numbers will matter. The inspirational message of change, the Internet fundraising, the creation of a grass roots movement for change is real and will only spread.

So it is best to let the McCain 2008 types spin their unreality while millions and millions of new voters keep registering as Democrats. McCain loses 20+% of GOP votes when running uncontested in these primaries. Can you feel the love for Big Mac amongst the ever-shrinking base of the Republican party?

Republicans are the biggest BS artists and bluffers of all time. In the past voters bought their fearmongering. But not this time. ALL of the Dems will vote for Obama in the end. The Clintons will want to repair their tarnished legacy and Clinton supporters will not want to give W a third term.

In addition to Dems badly outnumbering Republicans, millions and millions of independents and even Republicans, once they take a closer look at McCain vis a vis Obama will likely vote for Obama. McCain is a very likeable but pathetic candidate who cannot argue his way out of a paper bag. He will look like an alzheimer's patient fumbling around making mistatements and getting visably annoyed when the media gives him "the treatment" that Obama has withstood.

Obama's winning the nomination is inevitable now, and marks the end of the beginning of the election. Now comes the beginning of the end. Once we get daily Obama vs McCain news cycles like the past few months of Obama vs Clinton, McCain's numbers will drop like a stone as the media finally turns its attention to Ole Johnny boy.

Okay...I can't help it, but I have to comment about one ludicrous comment that can be found within every fanatical outburst about Obama's affiliations with Muslims, flag issues, etc... It is just a small thing, but it shows how stupid the fanatics are. Okay...how many out there somehow believe that a man or woman chooses their own name at birth? Anyone? Do I hear crickets??? This is why you are never taken seriously. If his father is a muslim...then it only makes sense that his father gives him a muslim type name, right? Did Obama have a choice? You can't explain yourself there no matter how hard you try. Take that bit out next time you choose to vomit all over these legitimate posts. And by the way...I am from jewish descent, on my father's side, and all my first and middle names are biblical. Does that make me Jewish??? (fyi...I am not)

IT'S GOING TO BE A BIG MISTAKE, IF OBAMA RUN AGAINST MCKAIN. I'M SURE HE GOING TO LOSE. THE BEST AGAINST MCKAIN IS HILLARY. IF YOU REALLY ARE DEMOCRATIC THINK ABOUT WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO THE PARTY.

McCain2008, care to explain why you have been sitting in a party which has 247 white Senators and Congressmen and Governors?

And, oh don't give us the Condi and Colin Powell answer, they were not elected by the republican base.

it seems to me the best idea would be obama president and hillary, vice president, that makes sense, why cant they see that?? deep south.

well put Mr. Goldman, well put.

Michael (L.A. CA) has it exactly right. Both in substance and in tone.

It is now time to unite, and this means treating Clinton supporters with the respect and understanding they deserve. While I am no fan of Hillary Clinton, one cannot help but be impressed by her supporters' enthusiasm, passion and dedication. We all share the same goal and now need to work together to achieve it.

I see people posting that because 90% Aferican Americans in NC voted for Obama that they are racist. Does that make every woman who votes for Hillarybob a sexist? Maybe they just think he is the better candidate. I don't vote for Democrats, I am white, and I would take Obama over Hillarybob any day. I can't stand her attitude that comes across as if she "deserves" to be president, I don't know, maybe for staying married to Billybob. I can't stand the Clintons and I know a lot of people that feel that way. They should just go away.

Somebody, please tell me why and how a person can stand up before the world and vividly describe detailed lies and still gain the confidence of American voters??? Incidents such as being 'under fire' from a past international visit, and that person only has to say that they must have remembered it incorrectly?????

That person lied to the whole world!!! and their excuse...!!!???

How would anyone know what is the truth and what is a lie, that comes out of that person's mouth??

Not saying that I have a better presidential choice or alternative, but, I JUST DON'T GET IT!!!

Why is it that every time some one mentions race ...we all go crazy...you would have to be a toatl idiot to think race is not an issue in theis primary....on both sides...barack gets 9 out of 10 black votes....Geeez that is a coincidence....Clinton gets older, less educated blue collar whites....wow what a surprise...Get over it...Barack is getting a lift because he is Black,...fact plain and simple...Clinton is getting a lift because she is a woman...fact, plain and simple...why is it we have such a hard timne accepting these things? The democrats are not this "pure as the driven snow, socially advanced, correct thinking" group any more than any other party. They just think they are...time to face reality...the democrats have the same problems that the rest of the world has....learning to live together and get along, and try to focus on the issue and not the person...so far they are not doing very well!!!

thx victor. i appreciate your comments as well. i am confident the time has now come for truthtelling and hope for the future to overtake the lies and fearmongering of the past.

Stop beating my grandson. Jeremiah is ready to give him hell already for sucking up to all you typical white people (like me) and for not paying attention in church: for 20 years Barack was listening to Jeremiah bitching about his wife's (Obama's) roommates-the white racists from Princeton and didn't know what Wright (the like father) was saying. Pay attention!

"He is like a father to me" - I never heard him say bad things everyone else did.

His wife graduated form the best Schools - Nothing to be proud of here in America.

Lets bring People together - even you Typical white people who all are racist.

FUCK YOU, Mr. President.

What Americans of any race needs to be mindful of is this, if you and your ancestors have been voting for a candidate who is of a different race than you, since you were given permission to vote by that race(via, bombings, lynchings protests, marches etc.) Then who would not rally around the first viable candidate of your own race? Many Americans do not realize how they sound. Why are the Blacks voting for Obama - duh It's the first time in the history of this self-rigtheous country that we've had the opportunity to do just that!Vote for someone who looks like us! It has a lot to do with pride people. It 's been okay for years for us to turn out 90% of our vote for a white man. Wake up America!

As an African American and a North Carolina resident, I wasnt surprised at the trun of events of last nights primary. Obama campaigned extensively in North Carolina and rallied people around his campaign and message. With that being said, I supported and voted for Hillary Clinton.

I have read many of the posts where people talk about the polarized and overwhelming black vote for Obama in North Carolina and most other states. No one should be surprised. I cant begin to tell you all the flack that I have caught for not supporting the "black" candidate. I find it highly offensive that many blacks that I come in contact with here in North Carolina dumb the presidential campaign simply to race, then have the nerve to decry racism at every turn. Do they not understand that voting for a candidate primary because of race IS AS RACIST as not voting for a candidate primarily because of race?

Personally, I beleive that Obama has secured the nomination for President but not without a lot of help. The media(until recently) has basically rolled out the carpet for him. I dare to agree with Geraldine Ferraro(to a degree) when she said that he is succeeding because he is a black man. Think about this, for the longest time, the media didnt want to say "ANYTHING" against Obama. Why? They roasted Clinton at every turn (and actually revealed one of America's accepted prejudices, sexism) and did virtually the same for Mc Cain. Did the media fear that they would be labelled racist? Even when the Rev. Wright situation came into play, network news waited weeks to break the story and many didnt even mention the story until they had to cover Obama's "race speech" and reference why he had to give one. Had the shoe been on the other foot and McCain had a white supremist pastor who was a close advisor for 20 years, Mccain would probably have to flee the country. Is that fair? Is that right?

I'm really trying to understand the media's fascination with the victory in North Carolina. This was Obama's demographic. He exells among blacks and they comprised a HUGe majority of voters. Who was shocked that he won? Actually, demographically, everything stayed the same. As usaul, Barak won blacks, independants and young people and Hillary still carried the white vote and people over 60...

I think what North Carolina DOES expose is that as Obama touts his "One America" and "unity" America is STILL more polarized by race then ever before. This democratic race that is supposed to unite us, really has us divided as history has always dictated.

I am a republican but after this Bush I converted to be a democrat. It is clear that the popular vote belongs to Obama, it is time Hilary honorably bows out, for the sake of the party. This will also demonstrate her sincerity as a public servant, and not merely serving her own prideful interests. Democrats must unite against John McCain now, if we want to salvage this country of ours in peril!

Oh, my memory is faltering.. I am doing my scrapbook...you all must know..where was Barack in the Sept 16th 2001? You know, the Sunday after Sept. 11th? You know the "God damn America" day? My grandson is so religious, his pastor is "like a father" to him, he is so sensitive! (I've been to church my whole life and barely know my pastor!)

So, anyone? Where the hell was he on the day when EVERYONE in America went to church? Cause you know...he WASN't in the pews. GIVE ME A BREAK.

KLO, you might want to get back to a lovely little comment leveled at Mr. McCain by a reporter, to the tune of "How do we beat the b----"? to which he replied, "Good question." McCain not sexist? Yeah, right. IMHO, it will be a great day for this country when we solely judge a candidate by their ability to effectively govern this country and lead us out of the swampland we seem to be immersed in without questions of race, sex, or gender gettin' in the way. Personally, if McCain wins, I will wonder if America wants to vote for anybody but an aging white male Republican 'cause yep, we haven't seen that day just yet.

JDMorgan, what a nice post! Thanks.

I am neither black nor white. I am an American citizen of mixed Asian background. These whole talk about Obama being black is bizarre. He is as much white as he is black! Polarized this and that, if we want to save this country from all the mess Bush created, we have to unite behind the popular preference, Barack Obama and let Hilary know its time to bow out gracefully - or else we are up to another smarter Bush type leadership under McCain!

Hillary should stay in, but quit if she loses in West Viriginia next Tuesday or in Kentucky.

Are voters racist - or sickeningly shallow? Obama's charisma and Hillary's husband draw votes, but more experienced and talented guys like Bill Richardson go nowhere because they aren't colorful. Sad.

Also, Obama is losing badly among rural whites and blue collar Catholics - key swing voters who dislike Rev. Wright. Obama may be a surprisingly weak candidate against McCain due to this.

"They would vote for Snoop Dogg" ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ First of all, Obama is not Snoop Dogg - he is a Harvard Educated Senator. Second, what do you make of the majority of Whites with college degrees voting for Obama while most people with high school diplomas are voting for Hillary? What do you make of the majority of younger people voting for Barack in never seen huge numbers? Are they biased in some way too? Your argument you pulled out of your buttocks does not hold up.

Maybe it is not racial but class based. People who can think, vote for the good guy and not the wicked witch. Time for Miss Hill to say Babye! Maybe all those white folks with barely a high school diploma voting for her would vote for her is she were Britney Spears...they vote for Trash like them.

It's interesting to note that people talk about Jeremiah Wright as a racist (he may or may not be), yet the U.S. is filled with 'white' churches that spread a theology that is openly racist, blacks are the condemned brother from the Cain and Able bible story and are cursed, whites were given the U.S. by God and had a right to eliminate the Indians etc. The mid-west and south is full of these 'religious institutions'. Oh yes and Bush was (and is) a friend and regular visitor to Bob Jones University (religious), that banned inter-racial dating and condemns homosexuality as a sin. Yet none of these shrill screamers accusing Obama of racism seem to consider this important. You may agree or disagree with Wright but he never actually attacked white people for being white, he attacked the undeniable legacy of real racism in the US, which judging by many posts here is alive and kicking in both political camps.

It's over HILLARY. WHatever reasoning any of you think Barack is where he is - he is still where he is AHEAD. It is over Hillary, you clown.

Obama has lots more funds than Hillary! Wait until he announces OPRAH as his running mate. He must owe her millions!

No one complains about pastors who claim homosexuality is a sin!! Hypocrites. Obama is the nominee and Hillary is done with. In with the new and out with the old.

If Bill likes Monica better than her, why should we accept her. OVER. Time to move on Hillary. Go fight sniper fires or something.

yes indeed race is a major player.america has come a long way.however, wehave aways to go.blacks feel justified being racist because of treatments by whites.as blacks we have to realize all whites are not bad.if this makes me a uncle tom oh well.certain blacks call me uncle tom certain whites would call me smart nword.i have no problem pissing everyone off so listen up.blacks need to stop being prejudice!whites need to stop acting like they don'trealize their racist.as blacks we need to realize its not a level playing field.it's not insurmountable mountain it was.we are clearly beating ourselves.black problems are going to change when blacks fall in together like just about every other race of people and fix it themselves.it sounds simple. however it's so simple it's extremly hard.

Just IGNORE McCain 2008, his way of thinking is of Hitler-type, which was disaster in human history. He is actually in real person SEAN HANNITY of Fox News. So credibility wise, just let him post to his heart's content, but VERY FEW will buy his ideas. I trust more Americans are more intelligent and will march along with Obama for a better tommorow and a better world.

I am very disappointed in all of you who are saying this is racist!! Statistics show caucasians are voting for Obama just as much as African-Americans. We as Christians and as people need to work together on this issue. I support Obama, but if Hillary get nominated I will support her. Let's stop this nonsense!! We already have a WAR in IRAQ!! DO WE NEED ONE HERE AGAINST EACH OTHER??? Please be careful what you say in your comments. This section was not placed here for everyone to start throwing stones at each other!! You don't even know these people who are making these unnecessary comments!! Don't let them get you upset!! Use that worry on something else. As long as we do what we are doing. (VOTING) God Will Provide A Good Leader!! Just like Moses!! Hate Me If You Like, but I Still Love You!!!!!

this is for barack obama you will win for now but do not be to joyful because when REALITY hits you hard it will break your heart.....and for my HILLARY as promise he will not win the GOLD ROD but hillary stay strong and as promise after the this our new leader is elected.... yYOU WILL BE OUR ATER NEXT LEADER..so give him h...... ok . ok. apromise is a promise....I> L >

I think the long drawn out Democratic race will help them in the long run as mcbush (very funny)is actually sounding and looking like an outgoing president even before getting into office. He may get complacent and overconfident before the general election.

I SMELL FEAR, HATE AND JAMES CROW III IN THE HOUSE.

THANK GOD, YES ...GOD THAT THINGS DO CHANGE AND PASS. ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT CHANGE IS DEAD OR STAGNANT. GOODBYE MCCAIN 2008 AND YOUR LITTLE, VERY LITLE CHEERING SQUAD. (YOUR PRESIDENT WAS A CHEERLEADER....RIGHT?) WAKE UP, ALL YOU HAVE LEFT IS BITTER, YES! BITTER COMMENTS. IF YOU HAVE ANY MIRRORS IN YOUR DEN, LOOK VERY HARD AT YOUR SELF. IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU SEE, I PITY YOU. GET OVER IT. CHANGE IS WHATS HAPPENING RIGHT BEFORE YOUR BEADY LITTLE EYES.

So much hooplahhh over Barack not being able to get the blue collar vote. I'm a 45 year old white blue collar worker from pennsylvania and I voted for Barack. I weighed the good and bad between the 3 presidential hopefuls and I decided on Barack Obama. I want a peacemaker not a fighter. The world is full of fighters ready to hurt others verbally or physically. one of the roles of president is to bring people, nations together to live in peace. Thats why I voted for Barack Obama.
